Top Google Searches in the Philippines for 2024: What Defined the Year

As 2024 draws to a close, Google has unveiled its much-anticipated Year in Search, showcasing the people, events, and trends that captured the interest of Filipinos over the past year. The list underscores the diverse topics that resonated with the nation, reflecting a mix of global events, local achievements, and cultural phenomena.

This year, six out of the top 10 overall searches were news-related, highlighting Filipinos’ continued reliance on Google to stay informed about current events and breaking developments. Among the trending topics, the term “heat wave” topped both the overall and news categories, emphasizing growing public concern over climate change, which also ranked sixth overall and fifth in news searches.

Sports and global events also made waves in the search trends. The 2024 Paris Olympics secured the third spot in both overall and news categories, with Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo emerging as a major highlight. Yulo’s Olympic gold medal win not only brought pride to the nation but also earned him spots on four trending lists: overall, news, sports, and male personalities.

In entertainment, Filipinos’ affinity for pop culture remained strong. Veteran actress Jaclyn Jose and former One Direction member Liam Payne, who both passed away in 2024, ranked second and eighth in overall searches, respectively. Meanwhile, the Filipino girl group BINI dominated searches among female personalities, driven by their breakout year and viral hits “Salamin, Salamin” and “Pantropiko.” Member Mikha Lim also secured a spot in the top 10 female personalities list.

Korean dramas continued their stronghold on Filipino audiences, with Queen of Tears leading the series and Korean titles categories. The show, which aired on Netflix, underscored the growing influence of online streaming, which saw a 12% increase in gross merchandise value (GMV) this year, according to the e-Conomy SEA report.
