The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) joined forces with SM Cares, in conjunction with the National Council on Disability Affairs, to commemorate National Autism Consciousness Week through the AOK Pilipinas Live 2024 event. This live special, part of a monthly web series addressing crucial topics related to autism, took place last 26 January 2024 at SM City North EDSA.
Bringing together influential figures from the ASP Board, SM Cares, government officials, and autism advocates, AOK Pilipinas Live! served as a platform to break down barriers and envision a brighter future for Filipinos on the autism spectrum.
SM, a steadfast supporter of the autism community, demonstrated its commitment to fostering inclusive spaces and ensuring accessibility in its mall facilities. Beyond providing Sensitivity Training for its frontliners, SM announced its support for Autism Society Philippines through the upcoming Angels Walk for Autism event scheduled for April.
Engr. Bien Mateo, the Program Director for Disability Affairs at SM Cares, underscored the company’s dedication to providing equal access and opportunities for individuals with diverse needs, including those on the autism spectrum.
The event featured prominent personalities such as actress/screenwriter Candy Pangilinan, joined by actress Gladys Reyes, singer-songwriter Nicolle Ferrer from the band Splendio Tritus, and former Bb. Pilipinas World Janina San Miguel. Together, they discussed the pivotal role of family in fostering awareness and education for individuals with autism.
Highlighting the need for legislative support to create an Autism OK Philippines, a panel discussion ensued with the participation of notable Philippine government officials, including Senators Risa Hontiveros and Koko Pimentel, and Congressman Paul Daza of Northern Samar’s First District. The forum aimed to address the development of laws that would contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with autism in the country.
