The PLDT High Speed Hitters have taken significant steps to enhance their chances of securing their first Premier Volleyball League (PVL) title by welcoming back Russian spiker Lena Samoilenko and introducing Adamson playmaker Angge Alcantara. With three consecutive top-five finishes, the High Speed Hitters aim to break through in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference.
Samoilenko, standing at 6’4″, brings considerable height and skill to the team. She made an immediate impact during her initial stint with the High Speed Hitters in the 2022 import-laden conference, where she led the league in scoring. Her return is expected to provide the firepower and willpower PLDT needs to clinch the championship.
In her recent performances, Samoilenko showcased her prowess by scoring a conference-best 34 points along with 14 receptions and 13 digs in a five-set victory over the Creamline Cool Smashers. She followed up with 14 points, 11 receptions, and 11 digs in a sweep against the Galeries Tower Highrisers, and contributed 20 points and 9 receptions in another sweep over the NxLed Chameleons. Her primary goal is clear: to win the elusive championship for PLDT.
“I missed the team, and of course, I want to take PLDT to the highest places this conference. Just like how winning is important for any athlete, I am no exception. I don’t like to lose. But without losses, there are no victories,” said Samoilenko.
Alcantara, on the other hand, steps into a crucial role, filling in for veteran playmaker Rhea Dimaculangan, who is on a leave of absence. Selected as the No. 8 pick in the inaugural PVL Draft, Alcantara’s entry into the professional league is a dream come true for the former Adamson Lady Falcon.
“Until now, hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala na nandito na ako sa PLDT. It feels like I’m living my dream kaya sobrang saya sa feeling and grateful at the same time,” shared Alcantara adding that she is ready to take on the pressure of filling Dimaculangan’s shoes with a mindset focused on adaptation and improvement. She credits her confidence to the support from her teammates, coaches, and even Dimaculangan herself. Under the mentorship of veteran setter Kim Fajardo, Alcantara is poised to grow and perform at her best.
“Isa talaga si Ate Kim sa ni-lu-look up kong setters kaya I’m very happy na teammate ko sya and alam kong marami akong matututunan sa kanya,” added Alcantara.
