I was invited by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to attend the very first Data Privacy Stakeholders’ Assembly at their headquarters in Pasay City (GSIS Complex) today. The by-invitation only gathering had representatives from different sectors involved in data protection and privacy, to include key personalities in the BPO, Banking, Media, Social Media, Health, Government and Education industries.

“Thru today’s assembly, we shall form the Preparatory Committee towards the creation of a Data Privacy Council in the country, a multi-stakeholder consultative body composed of two to five representatives per sector,” said Commissioner Liboro during the by-invitation only gathering of local privacy champions across sectors and industries.
Mozilla Philippines Community was placed under the Media/Social Media sector, together with representatives from Google, CNN, ABS-CBN, and GMA Network.
Commissioner Liboro added that this stakeholder-based approach is expected to be more effective and efficient in pushing for data privacy accountability across all sectors – making the Philippines a privacy resilient country. The NPC’s aim this year includes: building resilient companies, building resilient sectors, and ultimately, building a resilient country. According the NPC’s Chairman, 2016 was the year when they campaigned for privacy awareness; 2017 for privacy compliance; and 2018 will be the year for enforcement.
In a report presented by Atty. Francis Euston R. Acero, Chief of Complaints and Investigation Division at the National Privacy Commission, a total of ninety-nine (99) cases were filed in 2017. The NPC wishes to remind all that the deadline for submission of Annual Security Incident Reports is on 31 March 2018.
