The Philippine mining industry is urging stakeholders to step up support for responsible mining practices. They believe this will unlock the industry’s full potential to bolster economic growth and social development nationwide while ensuring environmental protection.

Representatives from various mining companies gathered for the launch of “Living with a Brighter Future,” a documentary promoting responsible mining. The documentary is part of the “Better Mining, Brighter Future” campaign, a joint effort by several mining organizations showcasing collaborations between mining companies, local communities, and government units. It highlights the positive social and economic impacts, along with environmental sustainability initiatives, of mining operations across the Philippines.

The documentary reveals that mining companies have pledged a substantial amount towards community development projects, with a significant portion earmarked for the coming years. These projects aim to bridge infrastructure gaps and address community needs, offering both immediate and long-term benefits. Examples include creating jobs, investing in education and healthcare, and developing infrastructure. In addition, programs like the IP Culture Revitalization Program help preserve indigenous culture.

“Mining companies have made substantial contributions to local communities through its Social Development and Management Program or SDMP. Additionally, the industry’s environmental commitments have been significant. Through innovation and modern technologies, the mining sector is reducing its environmental footprint and paving the way for a future where economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Progressive rehabilitation efforts, coupled with investments in reforestation and environmental protection, demonstrate the industry’s commitment to responsible stewardship of natural resources,” according to Atty. Mike Toledo, Chairperson of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines.

The mining industry has also made significant investments in environmental protection and mine rehabilitation. This includes planting millions of trees, with a high survival rate. This documentary emphasizes the industry’s economic contributions. In 2022 alone, mining contributed over PHP170 billion to the Philippines’ GDP and employed more than 212,000 people.

A keynote speaker highlighted a government report indicating continued foreign investment in mining. The government also recognizes mining’s role in achieving its development goals, including its ambitious housing program.

The mining industry’s message is clear: responsible mining practices can be a powerful driver of economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability in the Philippines. They are seeking stronger collaboration to unlock this potential for the benefit of the nation.
