Mercer, a leading human resources consulting firm that offers a comprehensive suite of solutions to help Philippines-based organizations navigate the rapidly changing world of work, recently hosted an HR conference aimed at addressing the critical challenges and opportunities presented by advancements in technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).

On the sidelines of the “Workforce 2.0: Unlocking human potential in a machine-augmented world” conference held at the Grand Hyatt Manila, BGC last 20 June 2024, I had the chance to sit down and talk to Sean Darilay, Talent Solutions Business Leader at Mercer Philippines. He highlighted a key concern identified by Mercer’s research: a decline in employee trust. Broken promises regarding career development and wage increases have eroded employee morale. To rebuild trust, Darilay emphasizes the need for personalized development programs and delivering on commitments.

The Rise of AI & the Human-Centric Approach

While AI presents immense productivity benefits, it’s crucial to ensure a smooth integration that complements human capabilities. Upskilling and reskilling employees are paramount for success. Mercer advocates for a human-centric approach that involves redesigning work processes to leverage AI as an augmentation tool, not a replacement for human expertise.

“Certain activities will help in productivity but what are the most critical elements of future-proofing the talent strategy of organizations in the Philippines to stay competitive? We know that upskilling is one but the environment is also rapidly changing. You need to step back before you do the upskilling — this is where you’re headed with technology disruptions,” according to Darilay.

Darilay emphasizes that while activities can enhance productivity, the real challenge for Philippine organizations is future-proofing their talent strategies. Upskilling is crucial, but the rapidly changing technological landscape demands a more strategic approach. Organizations need to take a step back before diving into upskilling programs and assess how these disruptions will impact their workforce.

Mercer: A Partner in Building a Better Future of Work

Mercer’s diverse clientele includes companies across various industries, from manufacturing to energy. They are also eager to partner with the government on skills development programs, leveraging their expertise honed through collaborations like the Singapore Skills Board.

While upskilling remains a critical trend, Darilay emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach. This includes collaboration with the education sector to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and industry requirements.

Partnering with Mercer empowers Philippines-based organizations to adeptly navigate the complexities of the future of work. By building a future-proof talent strategy and creating a work environment that fosters innovation, engagement, and well-being, these organizations can ensure sustained success and a thriving workforce.
