Filipino professional football club Kaya FC-Iloilo writes their own page on global football history books by defeating Shanghai Port FC of China, 1-NIL in their AFC Champions League playoff match Wednesday night at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. With this win, Kaya FC enters the group stage of the AFC Champions League for the very first time.
A header made by Kaya FC defender Audie Menzi on the 17th minute of the match went through and hit the back of the net giving the Filipino football club an early lead in the game. The Chinese opponents made several attempts throughout the game but failed to register a goal until the final whistle.
Kaya FC has booked their slot to advance under the AFC Champions League Group F, where they will play against BG Pathum United of Thailand, Ulsan Hyundai FC of Korea Republic, and Viettel FC of Vietnam.
It is also worth noting that for the very first time, the Philippines — a basketball-crazy nation — will have two professional football clubs entering the group stage of the AFC Champions League: Kaya FC-Iloilo and United City FC.
Kaya FC-Iloilo is scheduled to play against BG Pathum United this coming Saturday.
