The critically endangered Philippine Eagle received a much-needed boost in its fight for survival thanks to a partnership between the Insular Foundation and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF). Insular Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Insular Life (InLife), played a pivotal role in the successful release of these majestic birds back into their Leyte habitat.

InLife President and CEO, Raoul Littaua, who also serves as a Trustee of the PEF, highlighted the synergy between this project and Insular Foundation’s mission of providing “A Lifetime for Good.” He emphasized InLife and the Insular Foundation’s unwavering commitment to nationwide efforts to protect the Philippine Eagle from extinction.

“The reintroduction of the Philippine Eagles in Leyte marks the culmination of years of research and feasibility studies funded by the Insular Foundation from 2018 to 2020. By reintroducing Uswag and Carlito (referring to the two eagles released) back to Leyte, we are effectively expanding their habitat, significantly increasing the chances of survival for future generations of Philippine Eagles,” Littaua said.

The return of these Philippine Eagles to Leyte contributes not only to the eagle population but also to the health of the forest ecosystem, according to Dr. Jayson Ibañez, PEF’s Director for Research and Conservation. He expressed his gratitude for Insular Life’s partnership, emphasizing the importance of long-term support.

“We value our partnership with Insular Life immensely. Their multi-year support is crucial because these projects take time. This is a long-term endeavor, and we need long-term partners,” Ibañez said.

Insular Foundation’s commitment to the Philippine Eagle’s conservation began in 2011 with a PHP1 million grant to PEF for research and conservation efforts. This dedication continued with a PHP3 million donation from 2018 to 2020, which supported research, conservation, and public awareness campaigns in communities near Philippine Eagle habitats in Samar and Leyte. The Insular Foundation has also extended its support to the National Breeding Sanctuary in Toril, Davao City.

The Philippine Eagle holds a special place in Insular Life’s history, serving as its company symbol since its establishment in 1910. This affinity continues to resonate within InLife’s brand identity, deeply connecting the company with its Filipino heritage. Much like the Philippine Eagle, InLife aspires to be a far-sighted guardian, a loyal partner, and a dependable nurturer for Filipinos, mirroring the strength and resilience of this national treasure.
