In celebration of Safer Internet Day, Google has launched Enhanced Google Play Protect in the Philippines, a security upgrade aimed at preventing the installation of potentially harmful apps. This initiative is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to combat financial fraud and scams, which have become a growing concern in the country.
A significant factor contributing to these scams is the practice of sideloading apps, or downloading applications from unofficial sources outside the Google Play Store. These apps often pose as quick loan services, instant reward games, or other seemingly harmless programs but can compromise personal data and financial security.
Enhanced Google Play Protect: Real-Time Scanning for Stronger Security
To address this threat, Google has introduced real-time scanning in Play Protect, which actively detects and blocks malicious apps — especially those using advanced evasion techniques powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). This feature has already seen success in India, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil, and is now helping protect users in the Philippines.
As of 10 February 2025, the enhanced security tool has blocked over 3.2 million high-risk app installations in the Philippines alone. To put this impact into perspective, if each blocked attempt prevented even PHP1 in potential losses, the initiative has already saved Filipinos millions of pesos in avoided fraud.
Google’s Partnerships to Promote Digital Safety
Beyond Play Protect, Google is also leveraging local partnerships to further boost cybersecurity awareness. The tech giant collaborated with EduCreator Coach Lyqa on a YouTube video aimed at debunking common cybersecurity myths. Previously, Google also worked with Ben&Ben, using music as a medium to promote online safety.
In addition, Google is expanding its #YOUTHink media literacy initiative by launching an Ilocano-language version of its educational materials. Already available in Filipino, English, and Cebuano, this program helps Filipinos combat misinformation and navigate the digital landscape responsibly.
“Google is deeply committed to digital responsibility and internet safety. This commitment drives us to develop innovative products like Enhanced Google Play Protect and collaborate closely with local NGOs, communities, and ecosystem partners. Together, we can build a safer and more secure online space for Filipinos,” according to Jackie Wang, Google Country Director for Thailand and the Philippines.
