Google, in collaboration with Bastion Digital, has unveiled the GNI AI Workshops program, a 16-week initiative aimed at equipping Philippine newsrooms with the skills and tools to leverage generative AI in journalism. Applications for the program, which runs from February to June 2025, are now open for local news organizations through the Google News Initiative (GNI) platform.
Designed to foster innovation and ethical AI adoption, the program will offer training, expert mentorship, and hands-on support to five selected newsrooms. Participants will learn to use cutting-edge AI tools like Google’s Gemini, Pinpoint, and AI Studio to pilot and implement projects, with an emphasis on responsible experimentation.
Jackie Wang, Google’s Country Director for Thailand and the Philippines, underscored the importance of the initiative, especially with the 2025 Philippine midterm elections approaching. “Google is deeply invested in the Philippines’ digital future and the responsible adoption of generative AI. The Google News Initiative is committed to enhancing journalism’s crucial role in an informed and progressive society, particularly as the 2025 midterm elections draw near. We’re proud and excited to offer Filipino journalists AI training designed to improve accuracy, efficiency, and innovation in their reporting,” according to Wang.
Bastion Digital, a strategic partner in the program, highlighted the opportunity for newsrooms to take a “test and learn” approach. “As part of our ongoing collaboration with the Google News Initiative, Bastion Digital is committed to helping organizations navigate the evolving world of AI. This program, led by principal AI consultant Shaun Davies, encourages a ‘test and learn’ approach, empowering organizations to embrace innovation at their own pace. As we grow our presence in the APAC region, we remain focused on guiding organizations across various sectors in exploring AI’s potential,” said Jenni Ryall, Bastion Digital’s Director, noting their commitment to guiding industries in the APAC region through AI’s evolving landscape.
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has also endorsed the program, citing its potential to ensure truthful and accurate reporting during the elections. “Google has been a valuable technological partner of the Commission on Elections throughout several electoral cycles, and we laud the Google News Initiative for piloting this innovative AI program for members of the media. Upskilling a key electoral stakeholder will no doubt contribute toward ensuring a free, orderly, honest, and credible electoral exercise,” said Atty. John Rex C. Laudiangco, Director of COMELEC’s Education and Information Department.
Interested newsrooms must serve Philippine audiences and commit at least two representatives for the program. The application deadline is 20 January 2025, with final participants to be announced by the end of the month.
