Telecommunication giants Globe and Converge ICT have initiated collaborative infrastructure projects in the Bicol Region and Leyte Province aimed at enhancing network capacity and resilience. These efforts mark a significant milestone in the industry’s pursuit of joint expansion endeavors.
Formalizing their partnership in February 2022, Globe and Converge embarked on their maiden joint venture the same year. Covering a distance of 137 kilometers from Pili, Camarines Sur, to Legazpi City, Albay, this project utilized cutting-edge technology including state-of-the-art underground micro duct solutions. The endeavor, concluded in the third quarter of 2022, aimed at extending fiber optic networks and enhancing connectivity.
“Our collaboration with Converge demonstrates our commitment to improving telecom infrastructure across the Philippines. By pooling our resources and expertise, we’re not only expanding our network more efficiently but also significantly lowering the costs associated with such extensive infrastructure projects. We truly appreciate the collaboration with Converge as we share the same focus on delivering reliable service to our customers. We are looking forward to a sustained and fruitful partnership as we continue to strive to improve the experience of our customers,” according to Joel Agustin, Globe SVP and Head of Network Planning and Engineering.
Building upon the success of their initial collaboration, the companies commenced a second co-build project in Leyte Province during the third quarter of 2023. This project, spanning 209 kilometers and connecting Tacloban and Maasin via Baybay, is currently 80% complete and is slated for conclusion by the third quarter of 2024.
These initiatives align with Globe’s core fortification program, designed to comprehensively enhance infrastructure, expand fiber networks, boost capacity, and cater to the needs of hyperscalers. Moreover, the program prioritizes the fortification of the company’s Fiber Optic Core Backbone Network against the adverse impacts of natural calamities like typhoons.
Emphasizing the significance of collaboration, Globe underscored how partnering with Converge enables them to continually enhance network availability and consistency, crucial elements in providing reliable services.
Both Globe and Converge remain steadfast in their commitment to furthering cooperative efforts aimed at enhancing the nation’s telecommunications framework. By ensuring broader access to dependable and high-quality internet services, they strive to contribute to the advancement of digital connectivity in the Philippines.
