GCash has unveiled an inspiring new short film that tells the story of Adeline “Adz” Dumapong, the country’s first Paralympic medalist. This latest installment in the GCash Stories series highlights the challenges faced by para-athletes, from financial struggles to limited support, and serves as a powerful call to action for greater inclusion and progress.
“Adz is a true inspiration. Her story is a powerful reminder of the potential in every individual, regardless of their abilities. We hope this film sparks a conversation about the need for inclusion and progress for all, especially the greater support needed for the community of persons with disabilities,” according to Neil Trinidad, Chief Marketing Officer of GCash.
The film begins by taking viewers back to the year 2000 when Adz received the exhilarating news that she had qualified to compete on the international stage. However, her excitement was soon met with the daunting challenge of raising the necessary funds to make her dream a reality. Undeterred, Adz took matters into her own hands, tirelessly making cold calls in search of financial support. Thanks to the generosity of agencies and individuals, she was able to compete and ultimately secured the Philippines’ first Paralympic bronze medal.
Today, Adz remains deeply committed to supporting grassroots para-athletes, despite the ongoing challenges in securing sponsorships. Through her partnership with GCash, she has found a way to raise much-needed financial support for non-national team para-athletes, enabling them to dream big and aim high, just as she did.
Adz Dumapong: A Trailblazer & Advocate
Born in Kiangan, Ifugao, Adz Dumapong’s life took a dramatic turn at the age of three when she contracted polio, leaving her unable to walk. While staying at Bahay Mapagmahal, she discovered the sport of para-powerlifting with the support of the Philippine Orthopedic Center’s Rehab Department. In 2000, Adz made history by winning the Philippines’ first Paralympic medal, a bronze in Sydney. Over the years, she has earned 19 international medals, proving that disability is no barrier to greatness.
But Adz’s impact extends far beyond her achievements in sports. She is a passionate advocate for para-athletes and a fierce proponent of equal opportunities and inclusion for persons with disabilities. Her work has paved the way for countless others, inspiring a new generation of para-athletes and advocates.
Empowering the PWD Community
Since retiring from competitive sports, Adz has continued her advocacy work, focusing on empowering the PWD community. Her involvement with WOWLEAP, Inc., a women-led organization, has deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. As Project Manager, Adz is at the forefront of initiatives that promote inclusivity, economic independence, and social awareness for WOWLEAP’s partner communities.
“As an athlete with a disability, I thought I knew the problems of our sector – but I realized there’s so much more to learn. Working with WOWLEAP opened my eyes to the broader needs of the community. I’m now more motivated to help, and I hope to reach more women with disabilities across the country,” shared Adz.
In addition to her role at WOWLEAP, Adz is actively involved in various community initiatives. She frequently serves as a resource person at sports clinics, workshops, schools, and other events, where she speaks about disability sensitivity, resiliency, and inclusion. Her unwavering commitment to empowering the PWD community has made her a true inspiration to many.
