Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new AWS Local Zones location in Manila, Philippines. This deployment brings AWS compute, storage, and other services closer to customers, allowing them to deploy low-latency applications to end users or on-premises data centers. The Manila Local Zone enables customers to achieve single-digit millisecond latency for use cases like online gaming, live streaming, and augmented reality. It also supports organizations in regulated sectors with data residency preferences.

With this addition, AWS now has a total of 34 AWS Local Zones worldwide and plans to launch 19 more globally. AWS Local Zones simplify IT operations and facilitate hybrid cloud migration strategies. Customers can connect to the Manila Local Zone through the internet or by using AWS Direct Connect, which offers a private, physical network connection. The launch of AWS Direct Connect in Manila earlier this year was the first of its kind in the Philippines.

“The launch of an AWS Local Zones location in Manila is another step in our commitment to unlocking economic value by supporting the digital transformation efforts of all Filipinos. By reducing latency, organizations in the Philippines can help improve the performance of their applications, process large amounts of data faster, and drive productivity gains. AWS Local Zones will help customers accelerate the development of new solutions such as remote manufacturing simulations, immersive retail experiences, and live trading platforms,” according to Joel Garcia, Chief Technologist at AWS in ASEAN.

The Manila Local Zone complements AWS infrastructure in the Philippines, which already includes services such as Amazon CloudFront, AWS Outposts, and Amazon Interactive Video Service. These services provide high-performance content delivery, extend AWS infrastructure to customer premises, and enable the setup of live interactive video streams. Notable entities in the country, such as BDO Unibank, eCloudvalley, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and PLDT, stand to benefit from the enhanced AWS infrastructure.

The expansion of AWS Local Zones in Manila demonstrates the cloud company’s commitment to providing low-latency solutions and supporting customers’ diverse workload requirements in the Philippines and globally.
