In a strong show of environmental responsibility, SM Supermalls led the recent International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC), gathering over 135,000 kilograms of waste with the support of more than 23,000 volunteers. The large-scale initiative took place across 15 SM malls nationwide, reinforcing the ongoing mission to safeguard the country’s coastlines and promote healthier marine ecosystems.

The ICC, an annual initiative organized in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units (LGUs), and the International Coastal Clean-up Organization, encourages participation from diverse sectors, communities, and organizations. This year’s turnout exceeded expectations, marking a significant milestone in the effort to preserve the country’s waterways.

SM’s partnership with DENR and LGUs underscores its dedication to fostering collaboration in environmental protection efforts. According to event organizers, the collected waste will be appropriately processed through facilities designed to ensure its proper disposal. The focus on sustainable waste management highlights SM’s broader goal of reducing environmental harm.

The event is also a key part of SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of SM Supermalls. Known for its wide-ranging initiatives, SM Cares is dedicated to advocating for environmental sustainability and fostering community development. In addition to environmental programs like the ICC, SM Cares supports causes for women and breastfeeding mothers, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, children, youth, and cyclists through the Bike-Friendly SM initiative.

Through these efforts, SM is making a strong case for the power of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, proving that when communities come together, positive change is not only possible but achievable.
