IBM has unveiled its commitment to training a staggering two (02) million individuals in AI by the close of 2026, with a deliberate focus on underrepresented communities. This monumental initiative aims to harness the power of AI education on a global scale, with IBM set to expand its collaborations with universities worldwide, partner with organizations to provide AI training for adult learners and introduce innovative generative AI coursework through the IBM SkillsBuild program. These measures will build upon existing initiatives and career development platforms, ensuring increased accessibility to AI education and sought-after technical roles for all.
A recent global survey conducted by the IBM Institute of Business Value has revealed that executives anticipate that nearly 40% of their workforce, particularly those in entry-level positions, will require reskilling over the next three years due to the implementation of AI and automation. This underscores the burgeoning demand for new skills and roles arising from the advent of generative AI.
“AI skills will be essential to tomorrow’s workforce. That’s why we are investing in AI training, with a commitment to reach two million learners in three years, and expanding IBM SkillsBuild to collaborate with universities and nonprofits on new generative AI education for learners all over the world,” according to Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM Vice President & Chief Impact Officer.
IBM’s partnership with universities across the world is set to bolster AI proficiency by leveraging the tech company’s extensive network of experts. Faculty members at these institutions will gain access to IBM-led training, including lectures and immersive skill-building experiences, with certificates awarded upon successful completion. In addition, IBM will supply course materials for classroom use, including self-directed AI learning paths. In addition to faculty resources, students will have access to flexible, adaptable learning tools, including free online courses covering generative AI and Red Hat open-source technologies.
IBM SkillsBuild, the company’s platform for skills development, will offer learners worldwide the opportunity to benefit from AI education curated by IBM experts, delivering the latest advancements in cutting-edge technology. Already offering free coursework in AI fundamentals, chatbots, and critical subjects such as AI ethics, the expanded generative AI curriculum encompasses various courses and enhanced features.
Some of the notable course offerings include Prompt-Writing, Getting Started with Machine Learning, Improving Customer Service with AI, and Generative AI in Action.
Enhancements to the IBM SkillsBuild learning experience will include improved chatbot support to guide learners throughout their educational journeys, as well as personalized learning paths tailored to individual preferences and experiences. All these courses are accessible to learners worldwide at no cost, with participants earning IBM-branded digital credentials that hold recognition among potential employers upon course completion.
This groundbreaking endeavor builds upon IBM’s preexisting commitment to upskill 30 million individuals by 2030 and aims to address the pressing needs of today’s workforce. Since 2021, over seven million learners have enrolled in IBM courses. The global skills gap poses a significant barrier to the effective deployment of AI and digitalization across various sectors, extending beyond technology experts. A comprehensive, globally oriented approach is imperative, and IBM is committed to making free online learning widely accessible, providing clear pathways to employment, and placing particular emphasis on historically underrepresented communities in the tech sector, where the skills gap is most pronounced.
