The Philippine Ambassador to Spain, Philippe J. Lhuillier, officially took the reins as the Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Madrid (ACM) on 07 September 2023. The transfer of leadership occurred during a formal and well-attended turnover ceremony held at the Official Residence of the Philippine Ambassador in Madrid.
Ambassador Lhuillier, in his acceptance remarks, highlighted the enduring values of diplomacy, cooperation, and mutual understanding that have long served as the bedrock for the collaborative efforts within the ACM. He called upon his fellow Ambassadors representing ASEAN member states to pledge their unwavering support to the establishment of robust bilateral relationships between each ASEAN nation and Spain. Ambassador Lhuillier underlined Spain’s substantial role as a pivotal partner for ASEAN on both economic and cultural fronts.
The ASEAN Committee in Madrid, composed of the embassies of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, plays a pivotal role in fostering diplomatic relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Spain. The committee serves as a crucial bridge for facilitating dialogues, trade, and cultural exchanges between the ASEAN member states and the Spanish government.
Ambassador Lhuillier’s assumption of the Chairmanship comes at a critical juncture, with the Philippines taking the lead in guiding the ACM’s efforts to strengthen these connections further. This move is seen as part of the broader effort to bolster ASEAN’s presence and influence on the global stage and enhance Spain’s ties with Southeast Asia.
The Philippines’ new role as Chairman of the ACM underscores the nation’s commitment to regional cooperation and diplomacy, which is in line with the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter. Ambassador Lhuillier’s leadership is expected to bring fresh energy and impetus to the committee’s mission of deepening ASEAN-Spain relations.
With the backing of the other member states within the ACM, the new Chairman aims to solidify the ASEAN-Spain partnership in various domains, including trade, security, and cultural exchanges. Spain’s rich history and strategic location as a gateway to Europe make it a valuable ally for ASEAN in achieving its global objectives.
